Calcification, Common Causes of Joint Pain in Women

Calcification of joints or known as osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain. One of the most frequent calcification joints is the knee joint. About 13% of women and 10% of men aged 60 years and over have symptoms of calcification of the knee joint or knee osteoarthritis.

The incidence of calcification of joints was more often experienced by women, especially women with age above 55 years. The factor most likely to explain the cause of higher cases of calcification in women is the age of menopause.

However, calcification of joints is actually caused by various factors, namely genetic, the type of exercise practiced, a history of joint injury, and obesity.

A history of injury to the knee joint can increase the risk of calcification by 3.8 times. Old age, female sex, excess weight, muscle weakness, and even joint injuries also have an important role in the continuation of this disease.

The most common symptoms that occur in people with calcification are joint pain that is permanent, joint stiffness in the morning and decreased daily function.

Other signs that can appear are friction between bones, limited joint movement and thickening of the bone around the joint. However, pain is the most disturbing symptom for most people.

In addition to limiting activity, pain that never goes away can also add to the psychological burden and ultimately create stress.

So, what can you do to reduce joint pain? Management of joint pain can be divided into short-term and long-term treatment.

In the short term, consumption of pain medication and corticosteroid injection can help relieve pain. However, if weight, physical activity, and muscle strength are not corrected, then pain will continue to appear and can get worse.

So, long-term treatment that can be done is to reduce weight, strengthen leg muscles, and if it does not work, surgery can be done.
